I was thinking to write on this topic for a long time, and finally I made time and mind :). You probably know what entertainment is, still let’s go over it one more time.
For different people, the definition of entertainment may vary, but mostly it is defined as a form of activity which:
- provides us with pleasure and delight.
- relaxes us.
- becomes a source of amusement and fun for us.
- makes us happy.
And to have all that, we engage ourselves in activities like:
- Sitting back and reading.
- Attending some sort of a party/festival/ceremony etc.
- Watching something like: movies, cartoons, shows, dramas etc.
- Listening to music, while relaxing on a sofa/bed.
- Enjoying with pets.
- Hanging out with one’s friends/family/cousins.
I think I covered most of the bases, but if I missed anything, do forgive me. 😉
I assume, all these things are already known to you and you probably might be thinking, why I am stating the obvious. So, here goes:
Today, I want to talk about a particular entertainment; the media entertainment, dramas to be more specific. First of all, let’s talk about some of the old Pakistani dramas/tv. series. Have you seen:
- Sunheray Din
- Dhoop Kinarey
- Ainak Wala Jin
- Alpha Bravo Charlie
- Des Pardes
- Inspector Khoji
These are some of the old dramas that I like a lot. Why? Well, because of their light and interesting story-lines, their witty and simple dialogues, their family-oriented settings and their level of simplicity and decency. Such serials were free of evil plotting, and even if there were some, they were quite minor; they always felt like they were part of the story NOT the whole story.
If you haven’t watched these, I will suggest that you do. You will definitely enjoy them. These dramas and some other old serials like these, they actually serve their purpose i.e. entertaining and relaxing us. I am not saying that they are all happy-happy dramas. Some of them do have several emotional scenes in them, but those scenes actually help you to connect to the story, to the characters.
Let’s do a little comparison of old and new dramas, side by side.
|There is a balance found in old serials, a balance in the stories, in the dialogues, as well as in the get ups. They were more genuine and less dramatic.
||I am sorry to say, but in most of the new serials there is hardly ever any balance found. They mostly revolve around romantic love and hate, evil mindedness and exaggerated poor souls.
|In old dramas, there was a level of simplicity and decency.
||In most of the new ones, we can’t find much of a decency level.
|The old ones were simple and entertaining. They actually helped you to relax.
||The new ones kind of get to your head, in a bad way.
|The old dramas were mostly family-oriented, something you can enjoy with your whole family.
You can’t really watch the new ones with your family (males and kids, all) without encountering some embarrassed moments.
|The old dramas were a source of good vibes for us.
||Some of the new ones, kind of creep me out. While the others having too much of evilness, just disgust me.
|In old dramas, you can see boundaries. There were some topics, some things that were kept in the shadows, that never made it to the screen (probably that’s why they were much easier to watch with families).
||While in new ones, they say they are spreading awareness, so they are open about pretty much everything. (which can be good or bad, depending on what they are making public.)
It might seem like I am campaigning against modern dramas, but that is not entirely true. I just miss the old days, when things were simple.
Still, there are some modern dramas that prove to be quite good and follow a decent and worthy pattern. They have all those qualities of a good plot, dialogues and setting. As well as they prove to be quite entertaining and inspiring without being a burden to our minds. Dramas like:
- Pyaray Afzal
- Zindagi Gulzar Hai
- Bela Pur ki Daiyan (new drama, horror and mystery, so far its catchy)
- Akhari Station (new drama, about women struggle, inspiring)
Until now, it was mostly about my point of view. Now I will share some of the views of other people, concerning this topic. I asked them the following questions:
- How would you define entertainment?
- How will you compare old and new dramas in the light of your personal opinion?
- Are you happy with where the modern media entertainment is headed? If not, then why?
Here are their views:
Entertainment should be something that makes you relaxed, happy, light and shouldn’t be something that gets to your head.
Old dramas were really entertaining, simple and quite reality based. Nowadays, dramas are mostly dramas ;).
The modern media has its positive as well as negative impact on people. If you talk about dramas then I must say that a few recent dramas are really on great topics that our society should be aware of.
This is so much inculcated in our society but people are afraid to talk about it. And by showing such dramas might help them realize that the things that they go through might be their own fault. They might have helped in some way for such things to happen or if it was a society’s fault then how to handle it or how to stop it, take the drama: Dar se Jate Hai Sillah, for an example. It is showing exactly what happens in our society. I have seen so many girls who go through such terrible things that are so wrong, but our society tries to hide the wrong doings. They say things like keep quite, forget about it and all that stupidity. These dramas may be able to convey a good message to our illiterate people.
At the same time, these dramas are also creating some false impressions on people. I guess media has its pros and cons. It is spreading awareness and at the same time spreading too much of awareness, that is not needed.
Entertainment would be, for me, something that spreads good vibes and which I can view with my family without any embarrassment.
I liked the old dramas better as they were light and entertaining instead of showing the evil type of people in almost every drama. Also, most of the time, they were family oriented and I loved it.
I am not quite happy with the modern media. They are modernizing the social scene way too much. Also, most of the time, the modern dramas overdo things, there is too much of make up, in fact too much of everything.
Entertainment is anything that one finds interesting.
Although I don’t watch Pakistani dramas, with respect to advertisements and drama promos, I’d say that not only do we need to come up with more interesting topics, because 95% of our dramas are love stories, we also need to do something to curb the excessive vulgarity shown nowadays.
They all got a point, and the right ones as well. I second them on many levels. What do you think?
We all crave for entertainment, it is kind of a necessity, I just wish we can have the good kind, the kind that puts your soul to peace instead of creating a chaos.
Got long, huh? Let’s end this, with a quote, by Michael Jackson:
“Entertainment is about taking people away from the regular order of things when there is some chaos and pain and stress.”
