The First Meeting

“What the hell was I thinking?” said Lisa to herself.

She agreed to stay with her aunt who lived in a little town far away from public. Her aunt lived alone in a peaceful house surrounded by greenery and flowers. There were neighbors, mostly old couples. Married off their kids and now trying to live a peaceful life themselves. So there was not much noise around. Maybe on holidays when kids decide to visit with their kids but not for now. It was a nice place to live. Imagine the peace and beauty of nature all around you. But this was not exactly what Lisa was looking forward to.

Lisa wanted a break from her busy routine of work. She was a 25 years old wedding planner. She loved her job, she loved the planning, crafting and in the end seeing the happy couple satisfied and off to start their new life.  But then her aunt made her realized that she needed to take a break. She must have some time off, meet some people out of business world and have a little fun. Lisa really wanted that she just did not realize it. So, her aunt invited her at her own place. And what is best than a peaceful place away from all the fuss of life.

But it has only been  three days and Lisa felt like it was way too peaceful for her. There was hardly a soul around. And her aunt spent most of her time in her art studio. She has to make a living too. Lisa was not used to this much lack of people. And she was looking forward to meeting someone ‘special’ but there was hardly anyone around.

“What the hell was I thinking?” Lisa kicked the space as she was walking through the park. Suddenly she saw a figure on her right. Because of the trees she was not able to make out who that person was. Her curiosity got the best of her and she moved forward to find out. It was a person, a guy, and not an old one. He must be somewhere around her age and kind of cute too. As he was the first guy she had seen since her arrival, who was in her age circle, Lisa decided to have a little talk.

She took few steps towards him and stopped. What was she going to say?

“I had planned hundreds of weddings, have arranged hundreds of meetings, have told people what to say and when to say, I had even written the best man speeches but I can’t talk to a man for myself!!! Arghhh!!!”

Lisa kicked again in frustration but this time her foot hit a rock.

“Ouch!”

One look at the man and one look at herself, Lisa decided to turn back.

The next morning, after breakfast, Lisa was just strolling around the house as there was not much more to do. Her aunt was busy in her art studio. Lisa was not really in the mood of crafting so she just decided to FINALLY inspect the house. As she was going around the house, Lisa saw a red collar with a name tag Max along with a red leash attached to it but she hadn’t seen any dog around the house. Neither her aunt is a kind of person who has time for pets. So Lisa decided to ask her aunt about it.

“Aunt Ellie?”

Her aunt was busy in her work, concentrating so hard that she did not hear her the first time.

“Aunt Ellie?” Lisa called much louder this time.

“Huh?” Aunt Ellie turned around and gave Lisa one of her sweetest smile. “Did you say something, sweetie?”

“Yeah, well I wanted to ask you about this collar. You don’t seem like a pet person to me.”

“And I am not dearie. You know I collect things. This is another one of those things.”

“Oh. Okay.”

The rest of the day was kind of slow. She had a crazy idea but she wasn’t sure about it. She did a little over thinking. Even at dinner her mind was elsewhere. Her aunt saw that. After dinner and cleaning, her aunt sat her down and asked her about it.

“What’s cooking in your head, sweetie?”

Lisa gave her a sad, hopeless look and it all came out. Lisa told her about the guy, about her hesitation, her frustration and her crazy idea.

Aunt Ellie smiled and said, “Wow kid, you are a mess.”

“So what you think? Should I go for it?”

“What can I say? If your heart says go for it then go for it. And anyway what worst could happen?” Aunt Ellie winked.

“I could make a complete fool of myself.”

“It will be better than sitting here and doing nothing.”

“Yeah.”

“Go have some fun. Make the best of your time.”

“Thanks Aunt Ellie. I love you.” Lisa smiled and gave her aunt a warm hug before going to bed.

“Love you too, sweetie.”

Next morning, Lisa had a late breakfast and after that she went out for a walk in the park along with the dog collar and the leash. Her aunt wished her luck before leaving. Lisa thought she needed that…a lot of it. As she was strolling in the park, she started looking for that guy, hoping he was around. She was about to lose hope when she saw him, sitting with his back to the tree and his mind lost in a book. Lisa was about 15 feet away from him. As the guy seemed lost in his book, Lisa decided to put her crazy idea into action at that point. She breathe in and out once, twice, thrice and then finally started calling for Max (the invisible dog).

“Max! Here boy! Where are you?”

While calling, she slowly inched towards the guy. He was still lost in his book world. He did not even look up on her voice. So, Lisa moved a little closer and addressed him directly.

“Excuse me? Um. I am looking for my dog….and…I have lost him….um….have you seen him?”

The guy just looked at her as if she has just spoken in Spanish. Lisa lost her confidence there.

“It was stupid. I am sorry for bothering you. Have a good day. Bye.” Lisa turned on her heels to walk away. But she hardly walked away five steps, when the guy called out.

“Hey! Stop! Listen I am really sorry. I was so lost in my book. It takes a while to adjust to the reality.” He smiled.

“I was asking that have you seen a dog?”

“I have seen lots of dogs.”

“No, I mean have you seen a…..um….I haven’t thought this through.”

“What?”

“I mean have you seen a big…um…black…yeah that’s about it. Have you seen a big black dog…around…. I lost it.”

“It seems to me like you don’t know much about how your dog looks.” The guy said it with a silly smile on his face.

Lisa thought to herself: “He is on to me. I am busted.” She was still figuring out what to say or what to do next when the guy offered her, his hand.

“I am Zack.”

Looking from his face to his hand, she nervously took his hand. gave a little shake and quickly pulled away.

“Lisa.”

“Nice to meet you, Lisa.” He had that silly smile on his face again.

“Ah well…then I should continue my search for…Max…you know my dog…anyway bye.” As Lisa turned to go, Zack stopped her again.

“Hey wait, would you mind if I give you some company while you search for you dog.”

“Not at all.” Lisa tried to keep her cool but she was bouncing with excitement in her mind.

They looked around for hours but no Max. Of course you cannot find something which does not exist or at least not anymore. They also talked, shared some stuff. She told him about herself, her job. And he told her that he was a contractor and he was here to take a break from his busy routine back home. They talked, they laughed. They were having a good time and for a moment Lisa forgot all about Max and the dog collar.

There was a moment of silence. Suddenly Zack said, “Why don’t you whistle for him?”

“Who?”

“Your dog. You lost your dog. Remember?”

“Oh yes, sorry I…I am so worried that sometimes I space out.” Lisa patted herself on making such a good excuse.

“Don’t worry we will find him.”

He had such a reassuring smile. He was being so cooperative. Lisa felt bad about lying to him. But there seemed no way out without making herself a fool of herself more than she already had. So, she just gave him a sad smile and said, “It is getting late. Let’s continue this after lunch.”

“Ah. Do you want to inform the police?”

“NO!!!”

Zack raised his hands. “Okay, relax. Calm down. We won’t go to the police.”

“No. No. I am sorry. I can’t do this. I am sorry for wasting your time. I have to go.”

“Wait! What happened? I don’t understand.”

Lisa bit her lower lip and managed to say, “Listen Zack…..” But that was it. She was having trouble explaining her crazy idea in a normal way.

“I am listening.” Zack had a blank look on his face. Lisa wasn’t sure that whether he was just toying with her or he really had no idea about the situation. But Lisa was sure about one thing, she cannot do this lying thing anymore. She hadn’t plan a plot and she had no idea where this will go. It was just so tiring. So she decided to end this.

“Listen Zack, I…there is no….Oh God! What a mess I got myself into.”

“Quite a mess.” Zack had the silly smile on him again.

“Wait what?”

“You tell me.” Now his smile was getting irritating.

“You knew? You knew from the beginning!”

“You are not really a good liar.”

“I know.” Lisa felt drained. “Well, goodbye then….forever.”

“Forever?! Why?”

“Why? Do you really want to see this crazy lady again.”

“Yeah, I kind of liked this crazy lady. And I would like to know her more.”

Lisa stood there as if in shock.

“Well? Will we meet again?

Lisa gave him her sweetest smile. “Sure. Tomorrow?”

“I thought we were meeting after lunch.”

“You are funny. Okay see you after lunch.”

“Minus the dog.” Zack gave her his charming silly smile and waved her goodbye.

Lisa looked at the dog collar in her hand and couldn’t help laughing. “This is going to be a one hell of a memorable first meeting.”

When she reached home, her aunt was watering the plants. She looked up and saw Lisa blushing.

“Had a good time?”

“Yep.”

“Oh no, no, no. Not like this. I need all the details. Let’s go inside and you tell me everything, okay?”

Together they walked into the house, shut the door behind them and opened their hearts for new beginnings.

Best Friends…Forever?

“Claire, come on.”

Hailey had already reached the sea and was shouting to Claire to hurry up. Finally, Claire caught up with her and said, “Hey, you have always been a faster runner than me then why don’t you slow down a little when you are with me?”

Hailey laughed and said, “I want to be ahead of you so I can look out for you. The danger is ahead not behind. And you got my back. How would you have my back otherwise?”

“Yeah, but next time try to walk beside me and be with me.”

“Okay Claire, as you wish. Happy? Now let’s get in the water.”

And they had a good time. Claire and Hailey had known each other since they were eight years old and now they were sixteen. Since the first day they met, they knew that they were perfect for each other and they became best friends. Not a thing or a person was ever able to break them.

On their way home, Claire found a tree. She picked a hard rock with a pointed tip, with it she wrote their names on the tree and made a heart around them. Hailey was also watching this, she took the rock from her and wrote “BFF” under their names. Then she said, “I don’t know about you but you are going to be my best friend forever!” Claire gave her a big hug and then they raced back to their homes.

*****

Next day, they were coming back from school, in their bus. Everyone was singing and making a lot of noise. Hailey was dancing along with the singing while Claire was enjoying all this from her seat. Suddenly, the bus driver applied the brakes; Hailey almost fell over but Claire grabbed her. Fear was pretty apparent on both of their faces. Before they had their chance to laugh it off, their bus crashed into another oncoming bus. And then everything went black.

*****

The next day, Claire woke up in a hospital. The whole scene of the ‘bus accident’ flashed before her eyes and the first thought was that of Hailey. She got up with a start and looked everywhere. No Hailey. As she tried to get up, a nurse came in and told her to lie down but she resisted. All she was able to think about was, Hailey. She asked the nurse about her too. But she didn’t reply. Claire started yelling and then her mother entered. She tried to calm her down but Claire just wanted to know about Hailey. Why was no one answering her?

Finally, her mother looked at her and that look told her everything. Hailey was gone and there was nothing Claire could do to get her back. She fell into unconsciousness. For days, she remained in that condition. On sixth day after the incident, she finally regained her consciousness.

Claire was discharged and allowed to go home as she was better now. The only thing she was lacking was to get over Hailey’s death. She went into a trance, no matter how much anyone talked or tried to make her laugh, she kept her silence. Her family gave her time to accept the bitter truth, but they were also worried about her condition. One day when she was able to walk around, she went out for a walk. As she was walking, she came across that tree where she had written their names, and Hailey had added ‘BFF’.

She touched the letters and said, “What about your forever, Hailey?”

A tear dropped from her eye and rolled down her face. Then she turned back and went home, ran straight to her room, where she cried her eyes out.

Days went by and Claire was getting better, physically. She was a cheerful person, but now, she was more like a sad soul, who hardly ever smiled.

*****

One night, she was getting ready to sleep. Two months had passed since Hailey’s death. As Claire was getting into bed she heard a voice. She couldn’t believe her ears, because the voice resembled Hailey’s. She listened again carefully and there it was again. She jumped out of bed and was about to switch on the light when the voice came again and it was calling Claire. Without turning on the light, Claire turned around and saw Hailey, in the ray of her bed-light. For a second, she just stared at her, then she uttered, “Are you real?”

“Just listen to me clearly.”

“B…but….”

“I am here to tell you that you got to get a grip on your life. You need to move on, Claire.”

“But I lost my best friend.” Tears started welling up in her eyes.

“I understand. The pain of losing someone dear to your heart is a terrible thing and the pain never really goes away…But you are among the living, not the dead. If you continue living like that, then what about your dear parents and others who care for you.”

“But what about my pain?”

“Nothing can erase that pain but you just have to be strong, dear. You have to be strong for your parents. You need to return back to life. Just look at it this way,  wouldn’t it hurt your loved ones that you are destroying your life.”

Wiping her tears, Claire muttered, “What you want?”

“I want you to be happy. I am not asking you to forget me. Just want you to be happy and always remember I will always be in your heart. After all we are best friends forever.” And with this Hailey smiled and disappeared.

Claire woke up with a start. It was all a dream. A very vivid dream. She thought back on Hailey’s words and they made sense.

“Oh God! What I have put my family through? I need to get my life back on track, for them, for myself…, for Hailey.”

As she placed her head on the pillow, and tried to sleep, Claire made a promise to herself and to Hailey that from tomorrow, she is going to turn her life, for better.

PLEASE NOTE:

Life is full of ups and downs, lows and highs, smiles and tears, pain and gain, and the list can go on. But this is life. You cannot be happy for eternity, without any bumps, here and there. The trick to having a control on life is that, you need to function as normal with both happiness and sadness in your life. You need to accept some things as they are.

There are some things like the death of someone dear, that can break you. And it is quite tough to get over something like this. And in most cases, one never does. But they master the trick of having a little control over their emotions. One has to learn that trick to move on with life for their loved ones who are still alive, and even for the ones who are gone (they would never want you to just throw your lives away).

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF LAURA AND JOHN

Laura woke up to the sound of her alarm. She got out of the bed and checked on her baby in the cradle, sleeping like an angel. She kissed him on his forehead and said in a cheerful voice, “Happy birthday, my dear.”

Then she turned to her husband, still sleeping. She shook him hard to get him out of his deep sleep. Her husband (John), was still rubbing his eyes when Laura made her way downstairs.

After wash up, John joined his wife in the kitchen. She had a lot of ingredients on the shelf.

“What is all this?” John asked.

“Don’t tell me you forgot! Today is our Gabe’s first birthday.”

“Oh, of course I remembered. What I meant was what are you making?”

“Yeah, right.” Laura smiled and rolled her eyes.

“OK, here’s your breakfast. Eat it and then please bring all the things I have written down.”

“And don’t forget the sugar. I have to make a cake.”

Finishing his food, John got up, changed, said goodbye to his wife and made for the door.

“Goodbye honey. Don’t be late!!” Laura called.

But as John got out, he saw his neighbor.

“Hey, Zack, how is life coming around?”

They chattered for a while before heading their own ways. As John walked down the street, he met a stranger.

“Can you guide me to Downing Street’s press office?”

“Sure.”

After sending the stranger in the direction of his destination, John continued down the street and reached the supermarket.

There he realized, he had lost the list somewhere, but as he had gone through it once, he thought he would be able to buy all the stuff. After a while, when he thought he had bought all the stuff, he made the payment.

“I think I am forgetting something.” John tried to remember but nothing came to his mind.

“I think that’s all.” And started back for home.

On the way, he stopped to buy a newspaper. Finally when he got home, he realized how late he was. Because on the sound of his arrival, Laura came out of the kitchen and was now standing in the doorway with an annoyed look on her face.

“I brought all the stuff.” John smiled and tried to cool down the tension between them. But it was obvious from her expression that she was in no mood to smile. She snatched the shopping bag from John’s hand and went back to the kitchen. John followed her to the kitchen; she was taking out the stuff. Suddenly, she stopped short and murmured something.

“What you said?” John didn’t quite get her.

“Where’s the sugar?”

“That must be it! I thought I was forgetting something.” exclaimed John, snapping his fingers.

“You forgot the sugar…..” It was more of a statement than a question.

Laura’s face clouded over. “I told you don’t be late but here you are. Late! Fine I will get over it but you forgot the sugar! I told you, I have to make a cake!”

Laura sank to the chair. John tried to seek her forgiveness. “I lost the list somewhere. I thought I have brought everything…….”

Laura was close to tears. “Now what are we going to do? What’s a birthday party without a cake?”

“Gabe doesn’t know that. He is just a baby. Make something else. The guest will eat anything.”

Laura looked at him with a bored expression. Shaking her head she got up.

“I guess I will just have to make something else.”

“That’s my girl. See there’s always a solution for everything!”

With her back to him, Laura said in a tight voice:

“Don’t think you are getting out of it, this easily. We don’t have much time. Go change and dress up Gabe as well.”

“Diapers too?” John asked in a troubled voice.

“Yes, diapers too.”

As John turned to go, Laura teased him, “And try to enjoy what you are going to do.” She turned to face him. She was trying hard to keep a straight face and John caught the look. He smiled and said, “I know. I know. I deserve it.”

The party went well. After seeing off their guests, they changed for bed. As Laura was changing Gabe she said, “Not bad for a first time. You did a pretty good job, changing his diaper.”

She looked at John with a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eyes. Then they both shared a good laugh.

THE END

*******************

The story behind this story:  I was in the first year of my bachelors, when we were given a task. The task was to write a story based on a number of pictures. We had the choice to determine the sequence of pictures and of course to construct a story as we like, including the characters and dialogues. And then we were suppose to act on it.

We did good in presenting this story. But I wasn’t expecting what came next. Our teacher liked it. He actually liked my written version! That made my day. Of course, there were few mistakes here and there. He guided me on those (thank you, sir!). And also added that he liked how I composed the story and that he enjoyed reading it.
